Present Laughter takes its title from Shakespeare's The Twelfth Night:
What is love?
Tis not hereafter;
Present mirth hath present laughter;
What's to come is still unsure:
In delay there lies no plenty;
Then come kiss me, sweet and twenty,
Youth's a stuff will not endure.
The main character, Garry Essendine, takes Shakespeare's admonition all too seriously, continually indulging his considerable appetite for wine, women and sleeping late.
Chaos ensues as the relative values of the post-war class system are revealed.
